The Society for Disaster Medicine and Public Health held its Inaugural Meeting between July 29-31, at The Hope Hotel and Richard C. Holbrooke Conference Center in Dayton, Ohio.

Bringing together professionals from a variety of disciplines, attendees heard presentations on a wide variety of topics which included how China is developing a preparedness and response program for natural and man-made disasters, Ebola in West Africa, shelter requirements for individuals with special needs, addressing mass casualty triage, dentists as responders in disasters, the effects of disasters on children and how to have your mobile device ready.

In an interview with the Fairborn Daily Herald, Dr. Jim James, Executive Director of the Society, stated “We have been attempting to put together a society of disaster medicine and public health. The goals of that society are to create a discipline that is cross-disciplinary and doesn’t just involve doctors, nurses or public health, but all of the above.”
